General Medicine and Services

Wellness Examinations - At Sharon Lakes Animal Hospital, we offer comprehensive examinations that help evaluate the overall health of your pet. Semi-annual Wellness Examinations are critical to detect problems in their early stages, before they become serious illnesses requiring costly, prolonged treatment. Preventative medicine is the easiest, least expensive and most important way to keep your pet healthy. Early detection ensures prompt action that may solve the problem before serious consequences occur. Taking your pet to the vet once a year for a check-up would be like going to see a human doctor every 7 years for a check-up -- our pets age differently and cannot tell us when something doesn't feel right.

Vaccines - Immunizations are a crucial part of your pet's health care. Some immunizations are recommended yearly, some twice yearly, while others are given every three years. Usually administered during an annual exam, we work with you to develop an individual vaccine protocol that best suits your pet's lifestyle and medical needs.

Nutritional Counseling - Proper diet is an important part of your pet's health. Should your pet need a new diet due to health concerns or if you are just looking for a healthy alternative to your current brand, we offer individual consultations and nutritional plans to help keep your pet healthy. Nutrition & proper diet are important to the health and longevity of your pet. Obesity in animals can lead to numerous other medical problems - much as in humans.

Dermatology - Hair loss and constant scratching can indicate fleas, food allergies or other more serious skin conditions. An examination by a doctor is necessary to determine the cause of skin irritations, and the proper treatment.

Baths and Nail Trims - Hygiene is important. We gladly offer baths, with complimentary nail trims & anal gland expression, to our patients. Our luxury Bathing AlleyHydro-Surge bathing system and options for special medicated shampoos, will help keep your companion clean & happy. However, we do not provide complete grooming services. We will be happy to recommend a groomer should your pet need more complete services.

Surgery & Advanced Medical Services

Lab services: To properly diagnose and treat your pet, Sharon Lakes Animal Hospital offers on-site lab services, such as blood chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, urine culture and electrolyte analysis. This enables us to provide quick and effective treatment as needed, and helps your pet feel better faster! We also have twice-daily pick-up (and usually overnight results) from the largest veterinary lab in the U.S. when immediate results are not required or a special test is called for.

Anesthesia: Pre-anesthetic safety testing and state-of-the-art anesthesia monitoring ensures that anesthetic risk will be minimized. Specific tests assess your pet's overall health before the administration of any anesthesia. Your doctor will design an anesthesia and pain control plan specifically for your pet. We are proud to provide our patients surgical safety procedures that are on par with those for humans.

Imaging Services: Sharon Lakes Animal Hospital offers on-site imaging services such as digital x-ray, ultrasound and vetscope services to assist in diagnosing and treating your pet.

Dentistry: Clean teeth and healthy gums are essential to your pet's health. Infections are more common in the mouth because they can go undetected for long periods of time. Our veterinary staff regularly performs oral exams, cleanings and periodontal care as part of our comprehensive health care goals. Not only can we safely clean your pet's mouth, but we also offer digital dental radiography for better diagnosis and shorter anesthesia time, and oral surgery.
We also offer several ways to help you keep your pet's mouth healthy. Ask your doctors how we can improve your pet's dental health -- it affects far more than your pet's smile! Dental problems, if left untreated, can often lead to larger systemic problems in your pet due to oral bacteria entering the blood stream and damaging the kidneys, heart and liver.

Some Signs of Dental Problems include:

  • Bad breath – one of the first signs of dental disease
  • A yellowish-brown crust of plaque on the teeth near the gum line
  • Red and swollen gums
  • Pain or bleeding when your pet eats or when the mouth or gums are touched
  • Decreased appetite or difficulty eating
  • Loose or missing teeth

Knee (ACL/CCL) Repair Surgery: Dr. Steve Weaver performs two of the most advanced knee repair surgeries available. He is a certified TTA Surgeon and also performs the new TightRope CCL repair.

The TTA is a revolutionary surgical procedure developed at the University of Zurich, Switzerland for stabilizing knees with ruptured Cranial Cruciate Ligaments -- the most common orthopedic injury in dogs. This surgery changes the geometry and angles of the knee joint, allowing it to function normally without a cranial cruciate ligament. This is accomplished by the installation of titanium implants. TTA allows more normal activity, with less arthritis than results from all older techniques of ligament replacement. Unlike the TPLO, which severely compromises the weight bearing surface of the tibia, the TTA is a less radical, less invasive procedure that preserves this vital weight bearing surface, allowing for more rapid recovery and early weight bearing.

The TightRope surgical repair, developed in 2008 by a University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine researcher, is a minimally invasive repair option for dogs over 40 pounds. It is modified from a technique used in human ankles and allows placement of a device that stabilizes the CCL-deficient knee through bone tunnels drilled using very small incisions.

We can arrange a consultation appointment for you & your dog, where Dr. Weaver will help you determine the best surgical option for your dog.

Therapeutic Laser Treatment: The Companion Therapeutic Laser uses a class-4 (cold) laser to penetrate tissues and decrease inflammation and pain. Some of the more common applications of therapeutic lasers are for arthritis pain, back pain, bite wounds, post operatively, snake bites, and anal sac infections. Treatments are cost effective and don't take long to administer.

Laser Surgery: Laser surgery has been an option in human medicine for over 20 years. At Sharon Lakes Animal Hospital, use of a laser is one of many ways we offer a human level of surgery services for our patients. In many procedures, laser surgery provides a better alternative to traditional surgery. Why?

  • Less pain - the laser seals nerve endings as it cuts, so your pet requires less anesthesia during surgery, reducing the risk of complications. Pain after surgery is also reduced.
  • Less bleeding - the laser seals small blood vessels during surgery.
  • Less swelling - laser energy does not crush, tear, or bruise because there is no physical contact with the tissue.

The benefits of laser surgery to your pet are many:

  • Reduced risk of infection - the laser sterilizes as it removes dead tissue, killing bacteria that cause infection.
  • Precision- the laser can remove unhealthy tissue without affecting or removing surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Quick return to normal activities - healing is rapid and there is less post-operative discomfort. It may even shorten time spent in the veterinary hospital!

The laser is especially helpful in any procedure in which precise bleeding control is important, such as dog neuters, spays, declawing cats, and eyelid, gum and skin surgery.
